GOP 1990 full-time political appointments: One State and One Federal
Serving the government full-time during her academic leave from the University of Houston/Clear Lake was considered an honor and a challenging career path for Dr. Lee. Her appointment by the Republican Governor Bill Clements to serve on the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles as a board member in January 1990. Unexpectedly, she was appointed to serve on the US Dept. of Education as the deputy director of Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Language Affairs (OBEMLA). As a result, she left Texas and began her new appointment in July after her return from an official visit to South Africa as invited by their Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The introductions to both of her appointments can be found in two separate sections.
