Dr. Esther S. Lee (formerly known as Esther S. Lee Yao) retired from Troy University, Montgomery Campus as the Dean of the Graduate School in January 2006. After earning her Ph.D. from Purdue University at the age of 26, Dr. Bearden taught at the University of Houston Clear Lake, Southern Arkansas University, and DePauw University for a total of 21 years prior to her deanship from 2002-2006. In addition, she was Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Education, President of America China Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles appointed by Governor William Clements.
Dr. Lee was named Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1978, and received the U.S. Presidential Achievement Award in 1982. She is the recipient of the 2001 Outstanding Alumna of National Taiwan Normal University and the 2003 Distinguished Education Alumni Award of Distinction of Purdue University. She has also been listed in a number of publications of Who's Who. She served on the Board of Examiners of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) between 2001-2005.
With her broad teaching and research background, Dr. Bearden is a prolific bilingual columnist and dynamic public speaker. In addition to writing eight books and over 50 published professional articles in Education, Business, and Politics, she has received several research grants from US federal agencies and private foundations. She has been a speaker at a countless number of civic, religious, and professional seminars and conferences both in the United States and in foreign countries, including an eight-week Fulbright Fellowship tour to 13 cities in India in 1986, lecture trips to South Africa in 1989 and to China in 2009. She continues her speech engagements since her retirement in 2006.
In the community at large, she has been appointed at various times to more than 30 commissions, councils, and committees by the U.S. Congress, Presidents, governors, and mayors including the presidential Fulbright Scholarship Board and Congressional Commission for the Study of International Migration and Cooperative Economic Development. She served on the National Advisory Committee on Violence against Women under the US Department of Justice from 2005-2007.
Dr. Lee was born in China, and her ancestry city is Chengdu. She has two grown daughters. With her musical background (a concert pianist in her earlier years), Dr. Lee still enjoys playing the piano occasionally. Her current TV/social media endeavors and worldwide travels of over 130 nations have enriched her personal as well as professional life. (March 2022)
