Beyond 1993

This folder contains some newspaper clippings about the Asian Americans' interaction with congressional delegates from Texas.  Dr. Esther Lee always tried to introduce political leaders to the Asian American community, including both Democrat and Republican congressmen.  She organized Lunar New Year Celebration to introduce Governor Mark White, and hosted events for Houston Mayors Kathy Whitmire and Lee Brown (in 1998).

Basically, after the disappointing results of two campaigns in 1992, Dr. Esther Lee redirected her political commitment by sharing her political experiences with interested people, both Asian/Pacific Americans (APA) and non-APAs via various programs. As a result, she established a non-profit organization, Foundation for the National Political Leadership (FNPL) in Washington, DC in1993. The birth of FNPL can be found in a separate section under the heading of Resource Room.

Meanwhile, she also witnessed the opening market of China and the needs for cross-cultural understanding. Many American investors and companies that were interested in the mass market, were discouraged due to a lack of understanding of China’s culture. In summer 1993, Dr. Lee founded the America China Chamber of Commerce (ACCC) to assist American private sector in pursuing their joint venture with China.

Documents regarding these two organizations can be found in separate sections.

In the year of 1995, Dr. Lee had limited political activities. However, for the benefit of some Chinese Americans, she maintained her contacts with the congressional delegates from Texas during President Clinton's era.

In January 1998, Dr. Lee resumed her teaching career at Southern Arkansas University as a full professor of Education. The following fall, she accepted the position as the Department Chair of Education at DePauw University. She continued to pursue her career in Higher Education until she retired from Troy University/Montgomery as the Dean of the Graduate School in January 2006.

During Dr. Lee’s tenue at the three above mentioned universities, she remained to serve the public via her appointments.  She was appointed by Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas to serve on the Early Childhood Education Commission. Later she was appointed to serve on the Teacher Education Committee of Indiana Professional Standards Board and the National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women in the US Department of Justice.
